The hosts were extremely hospitable and communicated with us despite our limited ability to converse in Japanese and their limited English. The rooms were extremely comfortable and warm despite the freezing temperature outside. They also prepared extra-warm yukatas just in case we were cold. The onsen was located right in front of a waterfall and enjoying the sound of water splashing down and the fresh winter breeze in the warm cedar-scented hot spring bath was soothing and relaxing. Dinner was traditional Japanese Irori, which was rather interesting. We had wild boar meat and beef and chicken which we had to grill ourselves. The appetizers were also very delicious. Breakfast was a spread too (and very healthy) with lots of vegetable. We also got to talk to the host, who was really friendly and even told us how to make black garlic, which really got my mom interested.
